Mauls aretwo-handed melee weaponsinBaldur’s Gate 3that require Martial Proficiency to wield. Mauls deal Bludgeoning damage based on the character’s Strength modifier and come with two basic actions, Backbreaker andConcussive Smash, which can knock enemies prone or daze them, respectively.

Interestingly, Mauls also have a reaction when attacks miss, allowing them to deal a small amount of bludgeoning damage based on the character’s Strength. While there aren’t many available, the best Mauls inBG3have unique effects that put them on par withthe best melee weapons in the game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Maul

Updated June 23, 2025 by Joe Grantham:Game of the Year winner Baldur’s Gate 3 is a colossal RPG withhundreds of unique itemsthat can be found at various stages of the game. While Mauls aren’t the most numerous of items, with there only being six Mauls in BG3, the best of these deserve more attention than they get. Not only are there two fantastic late-game Mauls found in Act 3, but there is also one of the best Act 1 weapons, the Hamarhraft.

2d6 Bludgeoning

Baldur’s Gate 3 Maul +1

Common

N/A

Aside from the standard actions that all Mauls come with inBaldur’s Gate 3, Tenacity, Backbreaker, and Concussive Smash, the standardMauldoesn’t have anything fancy going for it and simply deals the base 2d6 Bludgeoning damage of all Mauls.

Thankfully, given that this is a common weapon, players can find theMaulin multiple locations in the early game, including having the option to purchase it fromthe merchant and Infernal Mechanic Dammonat the Emerald Grove.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Hamarhraft Maul

2d6 + 1 Bludgeoning

Uncommon

While there is nothing fancy about theMaul +1inBaldur’s Gate 3other than the Weapon Enchantment +1, which adds +1 to both attack and damage rolls, it is still a solid option given the overall power of Mauls, particularly in the hands of characters with a high Strength stat.

There are a few locations where theMaul +1can be found, including inthe inventories of two merchants, Roah Moonglow in the Shattered Sanctum and Zhem at the Zhentarim Hideout.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Maul +2

Shockwave:When the wearer jumps, they deal 1d4 Thunder damage in a 3m radius upon landing.

TheHamarhraftis a fascinating Maul inBaldur’s Gate 3as although it only deals the basic 2d6 Bludgeoning damage on attacks, it also deals Thunder damage in an area around players when they jump. When paired with builds that incorporate jumping and other bonuses to jumping, this can create some very interesting and unique gameplay.

TheHamarhraftMaul can be found at Waukeen’s Rest in a Gilded Chest in one of the burning rooms on the second story of the inn. Players are advised to approach the burning building in turned-based mode, as if they aren’t careful, loot such as this may be lostto the flames. The fact that it is found this early makes it one of the best weapons in Act 1.

Edge of Terror:Each strike fills the target with a chilling dread that prevents it from regaining hit points. Undead creatures also get Disadvantage on Attack Rolls.

There are a few weapons inBaldur’s Gate 3that prevent healing, such as one ofthe best Shortswords, theFleshrender. TheDoom HammerMaul prevents struck enemies from regaining HP from any source and also makes undead creatures less likely to hit their attacks. This makes it a great option in areas where undead creatures are more common,

Outside of this excellent passive, theDoom Hammerunfortunately does not have any bonus damage, but thankfully it is easy to acquire as it is sold by Grat the Trader at the Goblin Camp, where most players will head to at some point.

2d6 + 2 Bludgeoning + 1d4 Thunder

Rare

Grand Slam:Slam the weapon into the ground, thunderously impacting nearby foes and possibly pushing them away.

In terms of damage against normal foes, the aptly namedCorpsegrinderis one of the best Mauls inBG3thanks to the bonus 1d4 Thunder damage on top of the Weapon Enchantment +2. The Grand Slam attack is another great feature of the weapon and can be used once per Short Rest, possibly to knock enemies off of cliffs so that they plummet to their death, no matter how high their HP is.

The +2 weapon enchantment not only provides more damage but also makes attacks more likely to hit in the first place, making the Corpsgrinder and other such weapons more reliable. There are a few enemies who drop theCorpsegrinderinAct 3 ofBaldur’s Gate 3, including Cairos and other Stone Lord Agents who are found at the docks west of Rivington. It is suggested that players are at least above level 8, if not higher, before taking on this area.

2d6 + 2 Bludgeoning

Very Rare

Lethal Weapon:This weapon ignores Bludgeoning Resistance.

TheFoebreakeris the joint best Maul inBaldur’s Gate 3thanks to its 2d6 + 2 Bludgeoning damage, but against any enemies who have Bludgeoning Resistance, it becomes overpowered given the fact it ignores this resistance. Interestingly, this means that objects such as walls and doors which might normally be resistant to Bludgeoning, can now be destroyed more easily. Larger foes are also more likely to have Bludgeoning Resistance, making the Foebreaker a great option to bring them down.

To find theFoebreakerin Act 3 of the game, players will need at least one of twoimportant spells, See Invisibility orFaerie Fire, to reveal a Hidden Chest. The chest is found in the Karsus section of the Sorcerous Vault at Sorcerous Sundries. This is a magical marketplace in the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate and players will find many other great items here.
