In an interview withNewsweek, D’Onofrio discussedwhat fans can expect fromDaredevil: Born Again, noting that fans of the original series shouldn’t expect the new show to be just like the old one. “I think it’s something that people are not going to expect. But, always with these Marvel old comic stories that are being revisited and reinvented by us actors, and the writers, the main thing is to answer the fans. To give them what they want but try to be original in some way at the same time, and so that’s what we’re doing on the show,” D’Onofrio said. “It’s definitely an original way to look at this, and it’s really deep, really emotional.” D’Onofrio then hinted at plans for a second season ofDaredevil: Born Again, saying, “And, by the second season, there are gigantic, gigantic payoffs—in the first season, too, but I can’t say much about that—but the fans are gonna really get what they want. It’s really quite cool to be doing it.”
D’Onofrio has been very vocal about his love of playing the hulking Marvel villain. He’s even read most of the comic runs that Kingpin has been in - a piece of homework that’s definitely not required or expected of MCU actors. “Over the years, it’s pretty obvious that I love playing this part,” he said. “It’s hard work. We have a lot of episodes to shoot. We’ve got a long road ahead. We won’t be finished until December, and so it’s quite a commitment, but this character is just… I love playing him.”
The news thatDaredevil: Born Againseason 2 is already being planned should be encouraging for both fans of the original and fans of the MCU’s shows alike. Marvel Studios has a habit of being noncommittal about second seasons for its shows - so far, the only show to have its second season confirmed isLoki. With a second season ofDaredevil: Born Againreportedly in the works, there could be hope for other shows that haven’t had further announcements since their first seasons aired. One show that comes to mind isHawkeye,in which D’Onofrio appeared as Kingpin. While Kingpin was only in one episode, it opens the door for a future crossover betweenDaredevil: Born AgainandHawkeyecharacters.
Similarly, Cox’sDaredevil appeared inShe-Hulk: Attorney at Law, another MCU show without a second season announcement. Toward the end of the season, Matt Murdock struck up a relationship with Jennifer Walters that could easily continue inDaredevil: Born Again- depending on when the show takes place in the MCU’s continuity - or a second season ofShe-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Although much is uncertain about the fates of many MCU shows and their characters, Daredevil’s past and future involvement in the MCU could be a hopeful sign for characters that some fans may have feared would only get one season’s worth of stories.
Daredevil: Born Againis expected to premiere in 2024 on Disney Plus.
