Originally debuting back in 2019,Devotionremains one of the most notorious cases of a game being pulled entirely from sale to date, disappearing from Steam after supposedly mocking Chinese president Xi Jinping. Following its removal from the storefront,it has since returned to Taiwan, although it has not been made available worldwide.
Now, the developer behindDevotion,Red Candle Games, has announced that it’s allegedly working on a brand new project that it’s excited to share more about it in the near future. There are very few details about what this new release is, but the studio makes sure to tell viewers that more news will likely be on the way very soon.

The reveal comes alongside the release ofa Netflix adaptation for the studio’s titleDetention, which debuted on the service a few days ago. The TV show, which is currently on its second episode, follows a tormented student who starts investigating eerie goings-on in a Tawinese high school. The original game, which was the studio’s first release, blends creepy horror with Taiwanese mythology, introducing a series of unsettling monsters that stalk the hallways of its high school setting. It was acclaimed upon its debut, securing a spate of good reviews and becoming a cult-classic among its fans.
As for this new upcoming release, it’ll be interesting to see where Red Candle Games decides to take its talents next. The studio has exclusively dealt in horror up until now, and withDetentionandDevotionboth being huge successes, the company could complete its trilogy of reservedhorror gemswith a third entry. That being said, the team also has a knack for telling gripping and distinctly human stories, so there’s every chance it could utilize its talent for narrative through a whole new genre. It seems only time will tell, with Red Candle adding: “Hopefully we can share more info with you soon.”
Although the announcement of a new game is exciting for the studio’s wide fanbase, it does beg the question of whether its most recent game,Devotion, will ever return to digital storefronts worldwide. For those who didn’t catch the title being pulled from stores, it happened only a week after the game debuted, witha hidden joke comparing Chinese President Xi Jinping to Winnie the Pooh allegedly being the source of its disappearance. The comparison has been made frequently by the Chinese public to mock their leader and has since become heavily censored throughout the country.
