Final Fantasy 16’s combat director is Ryoto Suzuki, who previously worked onDevil May Cry 5andDragon’s Dogmawhich reportedly shines through, but for those who aren’t adept at that fast-paced style of action, it can be quite daunting and overwhelming. It was previously confirmed thatFinal Fantasy 16would have a story-focused or action-focused mode, but no genuine difficulty levels. However, recent previews show that there is a selection of accessibility items instead of difficulty options.

Media were able to attend a hands-on preview ofFinal Fantasy 16in Japan for a two-hour demo featuring a trio of boss battles, including one as Clive against thedominant of the Eikon Garuda Benedikta Harmanand another as the Eikon Ifrit vs. Garuda. All in all, IGN seems very impressed with the combat, saying that “each swing” made it apparent that Suzuki was in charge of the combat.

Instead of difficulty options for this combat though, players are able to equip certain rings that makeFinal Fantasy 16combat easier. There are a total of five rings, but only two can be equipped at a time, as otherwise players wouldn’t have to really do anything. These items will change how players engage with the combat, such as The Ring of Time Focus that slows time when attacked and gives more time to react and dodge. Below are each of the Rings' effects, according to IGN.

Final Fantasy 16’s Accessibility Rings

All in all, there is a survivability element to these rings that should makeFinal Fantasy 16combatmuch easier, without a dedicated easy mode. It’s not enough to say if it’s enough to help everyone who struggles with it quite yet, but that’s something that may not be fully discovered until launch.

IGN calls the combat, not just in boss fights but against regular enemies, “fast, layered, and incredibly flashy.” All the common elements are there such as combo attacks, butFinal Fantasy 16’s magic system works well when combined with this. They could shuffle through differentEikon abilities inFinal Fantasy 16quickly, with a quick press of the button, and combo together attacks based on Garuda and Titan, for example. Not only does this sound enticing, but the rings should help players finetune the experience to their desires and/or needs.

Final Fantasy 16launches on June 22 for the PS5.
