The latestGod of Wartitle has long been speculated to be calledGod of War Ragnarok, with fans finding many cryptic messages relating to the title since the release of the first game in 2018. However, due to new information garnered by IGN after a mix-up with a press-release image, it may be the case thatGod of War Ragnarokis not the latest iteration’s new title at all.
After the highly successfulGod of Warrevitalized the PlayStation exclusive franchise in 2018, fans were highly expectant for a sequel, and were constantly on the look out for new information about it. When a PS4 background theme was released showing Kratos and his son in a boat etched with runes, fans quickly discovered that the runes spelled out the phrase “Ragnarok is coming,” with other media echoing this phrase after the announcement oftheGod of Warsequelin September of 2020.

DespiteGod of Warfans finding these cryptic cluesall over the place, the title may not be quite as set in stone as they thought. After IGN posted an article regarding Sony supposedly leaking the title of the game via a logo in an investor report, theGod of Warpublisher quickly responded, stating “The name and logo for our upcomingGod of Wargame are not yet final,” and continuing to say that the name and logo for the game was “mistakenly used.”
The original image on the investor report did indeed sayGod of WarRagnarok, however, Sony has since updated the logo with a more generic one, that simply saysGod of War.Creative Director of theGod of Wargames, Cory Barlog, tweeted a reaction GIF of Picard face-palming, presumably as a reaction to the fiasco, with some suggesting that not only was the logo incorrect, it was actually a fan-made image that someone at Sony Interactive had simply pulled from a Google search.
There are a number of explanations as to how this all happened, it may be thatGod of Warsequel’s title is undecided, or simply that the specific logo is unfinished and someone out of the loop at Sony assumed they could pull the latest version straight from the internet. With so many clues placing Ragnarok at the center of the new game, it certainly seemed like an appropriate title, and Sony has waited a long time to officially weigh in on the subject. Whatever the case may be, if the latestGod of Warisn’t namedRagnarok, then what might it be called?
The sequel toGodof Waris in development for PlayStation 5.
