The game’s opening has quite a few surprises for players, but perhaps one thing fans have been eagerly anticipating is theboss fight with Thor inGod of War Ragnarok.
Now, Thor will remain an obstacle beyondGod of War Ragnarok’s opening, but the fight does a lot to set up how fans feel about Thor. This may or may not change as the game progresses, but there’s one amazing element of this initial boss fight players will never encounter again in the game. This does a lot to simply show Thor’s strength from the very onset.

God of War Ragnarok: Kratos vs. Thor
During the second phase of Thor’s boss fight, he will eventually trigger a quick time event that, no matter what happens, sees Kratos “die.” This boss fight does a good job of keeping players low on health, meaning many may believe they just failed and actually died in the fight, needing to restart from the beginning or at least from the sequence.God of War Ragnarokdoes a good job even of convincing players on this as the game flips over to its loading and tip screen. However, players will quickly realize that Thor is saying something and that it’s about it not being this easy.Thor then uses Mjolnirto “resurrect Kratos” and bring him back into the fight. This moment is an awe-aspiring addition to the combat, and regardless of other boss fights inGod of War Ragnarok, Thor stands out as the only boss who does this.
It’s likely to leave players confused, as to whyThor doesn’t kill Kratosand how his blood debt is complete, but these will come back up in so many words later on. For this fight, it shows just how much Thor loves to battle, how arrogant of a “destroyer” he is, and how much of a match he is for Kratos. Indeed, this moment sets a ton for their relationship and enables many of the game’s more emotional moments later on.
It’s such an interesting part of the boss fight that it’s something many fans will likely remember throughout their entireplaythrough ofGod of War Ragnarok, if not longer than that in fact.
