A team inOverwatch 2has spotted a reversing time in the tropical seas of Watchpoint: Gibraltar. WhenOverwatchwas first released, players naturally wondered how the maps would work. Gamers got to see their favorite and least favorite maps go in and out of rotation, both in recreational and competitive play. WhenOverwatch 2was announced, gamers once again got to wonder which maps would make the cut.
Althoughsome controversial maps could have made a comeback in the sequel, nobody was surprised that the popular Watchpoint: Gibraltar would also be included. However, even this relatively routine decision apparently wasn’t as simple to implement as it appears. On Reddit, user Arbow_ noticed a strange detail when playing on the Watchpoint: Gibraltar map. Preparing to defend in front of the attackers' spawn point and overlooking the sea, Cassidy and his pals spotted one of the boats out in the ocean. That sounds normal, but there was nothing routine about the direction the vessel was heading.

Despite the water wake appearing behind the boat as normal, the boat and the wake were moving backward. Even landlocked gamers will be immediately jarred by the brief scene, watching a boat move in the opposite direction of where all the evidence says that it came from. How this happened for this one boat while the others remain moving forward as normal is a mystery for now. Whether it’s immersion-breaking and a gross oversight or a simple and innocent error, gamers will need to see it for themselves to decide.
With a mistake like this, it can be theorized thatNumbani is missingwhile the team irons out some details. If importing the original game intoOverwatch 2creates this level of complication, it can be estimated that other maps have issues to be ironed out for simple reasons such as the aesthetic decorations.
It’s just something to keep in mind whileexploring new maps like Esperanca. For every bit of new and appreciated creativity, there also needs to be some consideration for those bringing the old maps back to life. It can go wrong in any number of ways and gamers should be mindful that these unintended mistakes are a part of the process.Overwatch 2is a live-service game and Activision Blizzard, for all of its troubles, has been committed to keeping this franchise polished so far. It will likely only be a week or two before the now infamous “backward boat” gets navigated to move in the correct direction.
This change isn’t at the top of their list, to be sure. Eventhe menu has some uneven issuesthat need to be worked out. So, for now, players who queue up for a game and get Watchpoint: Gibraltar should take a moment to check out this soon-to-be piece of history for themselves.
Overwatch 2is available now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
