Traditionally, June is a massive month for the gaming industry, as it’s when E3 usually takes place.E3 2022 has been canceled, and while that definitely leaves a hole when it comes to June gaming events, the bright side is that there are still big events planned for next month. Microsoft is hosting a showcase on June 12 to highlight upcoming Bethesda and Xbox games, while Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest is returning for June 9.
There will likely be other gaming events taking place in June that haven’t been announced yet, with one possibility being a new State of Play event fromPlayStation. For the uninitiated, the State of Play events fromPlayStationare the company’s take on Nintendo Direct presentations. They are short digital events that shine a spotlight on upcoming PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games, though their degree of importance can vary dramatically.

Some PlayStation State of Plays are underwhelming, whereas other State of Plays are huge, featuring blockbuster announcements, release date reveals, and more. WhileSony has not participated in E3 itself for years at this point, many still expect the company to make big announcements around E3 season, and this year is no different. That’s why there are rumors making the rounds online that Sony could be hosting the next PlayStation State of Play event in early June.
This rumor stems from industry insider Jeff Grubb, but it’s worth pointing out that June isn’t the only possibility for the next PlayStation State of Play. After Grubb’s comments about a potentialPlayStation State of Play taking place in the first week of Junegained traction online, he took to Twitter to clarify that he’s also heard that the next State of Play may not take place until September instead.
Of course, it’s always possible that Sony will host two State of Play events, one in June and one in September, and so fans should keep that in mind as well. Last year, Sony hosted a State of Play in July, and then it hosted a larger-scale one in September, with the latter featuringGod of War Ragnarok,Spider-Man 2, and theshockWolverinegame announcement. Maybe something similar will happen this year, but fans will need to wait for an official announcement from Sony to be sure.
As it stands, there have already been a few State of Play events that have taken place in 2022. The first one was aGran Turismo 7-focused State of Play, while the second State of Play was more general. The highest profile State of Play this year was theHogwarts LegacyState of Play, as it finally gaveHarry Potterfans a comprehensive look at the highly-anticipated action-RPG set in the Wizarding World.
