While Retro Studios is best known for its work on theMetroid Primegames, the developer has occasionally stepped out to develop for other Nintendo franchises. This includes titles likeDonkey Kong Country Returnsfor the Wii andMario Kart 7for the 3DS. The studio is once again hard at work developing the nextMetroid Primeentry, though there have been some reports that indicate that it is still in the early stages of being developed. In addition, one game has recently come to light that was originally being developed for the studio, this being a spin-off toThe Legend of Zeldaseries known asHeroes of Hyrule.

This isn’t the first time thatRetro Studios was working on aZeldaspin-offbefore it was canceled, as evidenced by some concept art that was leaked last year that involved a playable male Sheikah for a game known asProject X. This would involve the player following this Sheikah’s journey through a Dark Timeline, which would also explore the origin of the Master Sword. DidYouKnowGaming coveredProject Xin its latest video, but also managed to uncover another spin-off,Heroes of Hyrule, complete with concept art and a brief plot synopsis.

Near the end of DidYouKnowGaming’s video regardingRetro Studios' canceled Sheikah game, they mentioned as they were speaking with former studio members, they came into possession of the aforementionedHeroes of Hyrule, which was going to be a completely different type of spin-off. According to the writer of the video, Dr. Lava, it would have been a strategy RPG, similar toFinal Fantasy Tactics.

The story’s timeline of the canceledHeroes of Hyrulewas also included, where Link goes on to save Zelda, but Ganon ambushes Link and captures him. It would have starred three playable characters: a Goron, Rito, and Zora, similar toBreath of the Wild’s Champions. These three friends of Link then set out on a journey to rescue him. Eventually, Ganon is defeated, and 100 years pass. UnlikeBreath of the Wildwhere Link stays young due to a shrine, he ends up aging into an old man who runs an antique shop.

Dr. Lava and the video from DidYouKnowGaming also showed off some concept art, which includes how the encounters would have been structured, along with the player’s perspective. Concept art of Hyrule was also shown, alongside how the playable characters and Link would have looked like in thisRetro StudiosZeldagame. DYKG promises a future video that will highlight more information about this canceled title.

Heroes of Hyrulewas canceled and is not in development.
