The Soulsborne series of RPGs developed by FromSoftware are known for a few things. Usually, the games will feature a dark fantasy setting, where the player creates their own character in order to traverse the map and fight some extremely difficult bosses. There are plenty of other things that a FromSoftware fan will notice in every title fromDemon’s SoulstoElden Ring, such as theswamps that decorate at least a portion of every map in the Soulsborne games.
Often, fans like to debate which of these reoccurring features in the Soulsborne franchise is the best, or, in the case of swamps, which is the worst. Recently, fans have been discussing which game has the best fog door. Fog doors are the way in which players fromDemonSoulstoElden Ringcan face bosses. When interacting with the door, a player will encounter a short animation showing them step from one area to another. Essentially this helps prevent regular enemies from following players into boss rooms.

Players debated over every entry in the Soulsborne series. However, notably missing from the lineup was FromSoftware’s 2019 action gameSekiro: Shadows Die Twice. This absence will likely make sense for the majority of Soulsborne fans, asSekirois not considered a part of the Soulsborne franchiseaccording to FromSoftware, as it has too many mechanical differences between it and RPGs likeElden Ring. There have been some additions toElden Ringbased onSekiro, such as the Samurai class and Malenia boss fight.
The top voted comment on the Reddit post beginning the debate of which game has the best fog door crownedDemon’s Soulsas the winner. This was becauseDemon’s Soulshas a lore explanationfor its fog doors, whereas the following games merely use them for gameplay’s sake, so that a boss fight is a true duel between the player and one of a Soulsborne game’s strongest enemies. Some other fans joked thatBloodborne’sfog also had an explanation, as the game is based in England and that anyone who lived in London would recognize the fog doors almost instantly.
DespiteDemon’s Soulslore explaining that the fog door is part of the setting, many fans still stated thatBloodbornehad their favorite fog door. One fan stated that this may come from aBloodbornebias in the FromSoftware community, due to it being the favorite game of many fans. Considering the debate is likely still ongoing, and it being over such a subjective matter, it seems fans may never have a conclusive answer.
Elden Ringis out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
