PC VR players feeling left out after seeing some of the high-profile releases on Sony’s PS VR2 in recent weeks now have some good news headed their way, as developer Combat Waffle Studios announces that their extraction-based shooterGhosts of Taborhas begun open alpha testing. Heavily inspired byDayZandsurvival shooterEscape from Tarkov, the VR-exclusive game features PVE and PVP battles set across multiple different scenarios.Popularized by games like 2017’sEscape from Tarkov, extraction-based shooters combine the slow, methodical pacing of tactical first-person shooters with gameplay mechanics more often seen in survival games. Rather than winning rounds by dominating multiplayer scoreboards with the highest kill-to-death ratio, extraction-based shooters typically task players with scavenging, looting, and crafting weapons and equipment to survive against human or AI opponents. Activision incorporated many elements of the popular, hardcore-focused genre intoCall of Duty: Warzone 2’s DMZ modewhen it released late last year, with the new mode earning rave reviews from many players.RELATED:World’s Smallest VR Headset Has 5K DisplayIn a short video posted to Twitter by developer Combat Waffle Studios, it was announced thatGhosts of Taborhas officially entered open alpha testing on PC. Available to Steam users who request access from the game’s store page, theGhosts of Taboralpha test gives interested players the chance to try out the VR title’s take on the crafting, looting, and survival mechanics that have become a staple of the extraction-based shooter genre. Designed to stress test the multiplayer servers ahead of the game’s launch, the video concludes with the developers imploring players to enjoy the shooting and looting and to “most importantly, break our game!”

In replies to the announcement, several gamers who’d been followingGhosts of Tabor’s development process congratulated the team at Combat Waffle Studios for reaching open alpha. While many replies expressed their excitement at finally being able to try the VR shooter out for themselves, some gamers who’d pre-ordered the game for Meta Quest 2 and PS VR2 were disappointed to learn that the open alpha test is for PC only. Responding to one commenter who inquired about when they could try the game onSony’s new VR headset, the developer stated that it is “planning for a September PSVR 2 release.” Players on the Meta Quest 2 will similarly have to wait for a full release before hopping intoGhosts of Tabor.

With its tactical gunplay, survival mechanics, and the ability to craft and trade to build an epic arsenal,Ghosts of Taborcould be a breath of fresh air for hardcore VR gamers tired of a seemingly endless stream of casual-focused content. And while it may draw inspiration from the flatscreen shooter, hopefully,Ghosts of Taborwon’t also suffer fromEscape from Tarkov’s cheating problems.

Ghosts of Taboris currently in development for PC, Meta Quest 2, PICO, and PlayStation VR2.
