TwoNintendo Directpresentations could be on the way soon, according to a staff writer at VentureBeat and an online flub by U.K. retailer GAME. VentureBeat’s Jeff Grub has claimed that sources are indicating thatNintendo is gearing up for two Directs, which are set to air next week and the week after. Although this claim is credible enough on its own, Grub’s assertion was strangely supported, to a degree, by a random mishap from an online post by GAME, which was promoting the just announced collaboration between Nintendo and LEGO. With the Directs likely happening, Nintendo will finally update fans on its plans for the rest of 2020.
ForMario Day(March 10), it was announced thatSuper Mariowould be getting the LEGO treatment, but the details for the future project have yet to be revealed meaning it isn’t clear if this is a new game, playset, etc. Shortly after, GAME’s online post on the collaboration made a reference to a nonexistent Direct that supposedly occurred. The post was quickly edited to reflect the truth but not before the internet got wind of what it was implying - a Nintendo Direct either was supposed to happen or is happening soon. Grub’s later claims support the latter.

It should be noted that one of the Directs has been rumored to be indie-focused while the other one is a traditional one (the last proper Nintendo Direct occurred in September 2019).

Confirmed Nintendo Games on the Backburner
If the PS5 and Xbox Series X aren’t delayed out of this year, then Nintendo needs to step up to show what it has in store for the rest of 2020. So far, the biggest confirmed games coming exclusively to the Switch eventually (excludingAnimal Crossing New Horizons) areThe Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2,Bravely Default 2,andNo More Heroes 3.The sequel toBreath of the Wildprobably won’t release this year, if only because of development time (BotW,and the Nintendo Switch, were released just three years ago).
However, enough time has passed to make it likely that Nintendo has at least something big to show from the game. This means that although it’s not releasing soon, another trailer forBotW 2could be shown at the Direct later this month. It’s possible that Nintendo also finally confirms thetitle forBreath of the Wild 2,which is likely to drop the number. It’s also possible that Nintendo goes further than showing just a trailer and actually gives fans a look at live gameplay. Maybe it’ll reveal just how Link and Zelda will be adventuring together in the upcoming game.
However, the latter games have been given a tentative 2020 release window so it’s likely that Nintendo will want to showcase these two games more, and the unconfirmed Direct later this month is the perfect place to do so. Of all the games that Nintendo could showcase during the potential Direct in two weeks,No More Heroes 3andBravely Default 2are probably the likeliest games to be shown off there, unless there has been a delay in either of the games’ development. Elsewhere, Nintendo is also likely to reveal the next DLC character forSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, although rumors have been light in that department. Otherwise, Nintendo could always re-revealMetroid Prime 4.
Other Nintendo Games and Rumors
Nintendo would make a lot of fans happy if it decided to re-revealMetroid Prime 4at this Direct. A new trailer, developer update, etc., would hold over fans who are still thirsty from the years-longMetroiddrought. Even more so thanBreath of the Wild 2,Metroid Prime 4is unlikely to come out this year (or next year really), which is why it would also enormously benefit Nintendo to finally confirm the existence of the remasteredMetroid Prime Trilogyfor the Switch.
The remastered trilogy was leaked a long time ago and is presumably being held until Nintendo could figure out the release date forMetroid Prime 4.An announcement of either the trilogy or the new game at this Nintendo Direct would go a long way for fans. Another game that could stand to be remastered for theSwitch isSuper Mario 3D World, which was rumored to be a thing after Twitter user (and noted leaker) Sabi made it a bigger deal. Sabi’s claims have sometimes been proven correct in the past which is why this seems true (it’d also be a no-brainer for Nintendo).
Sabi also recently hinted that a newMario Kartwould be coming to the Switch, so if that’s the case, then Nintendo ought to showcase it during the rumored Direct. Going by GAME’s mishap yesterday, it’s also possible (and likely) that the collaboration betweenNintendo and LEGOwill be explored more during the Direct so that’s something fans can look forward to. Otherwise Nintendo is sure to have a couple of games up its sleeves that fans are unaware of. Seeing as how it loves revealing surprises during Direct presentations, fans can certainly expect new things to be announced by Nintendo in the upcoming Direct as well.
The twoNintendo Directpresentations are rumored to air over the next two weeks.
