Reddit user u/ThePup26 decided that the best way to reveal a surprise birthday trip to their wife was to craft a physical version of the popular word gameWordle. They printed out three rounds of puzzles and attached that to some backing cards before giving them to their wife to solve. The three games, when combined, revealed the date and destination for a birthday vacation in Mexico.

Wordleis a web-based word puzzle game that is owned and published byThe New York Timesthat has over 300,000 people play it daily. The game works by giving players a five-letter word to solve. Words are released daily, giving players six attempts based on the remaining letters and words that the player has used. Once players solve or fail the puzzle, they’re not allowed another attempt until the next day.

Wordle’s continuing popularity has already seen scores of copycat variants of the game across the internet, usually created by independent programmers. An interesting variant created by u/decccydecccs utilizing a site known asCustom Wordlegave us a cute exampleof user ingenuity with a marriage proposal. Other variants of the game have replaced words with math, geography, or trivia while maintaining the core mechanic of six attempts to a reveal.

Of course, not all variants are quite as innocent, and imitation is not always the sincerest form of flattery. TakeLewdlefor example. Another copycat ofWordle, uses the same mechanics as its ancestor but is most definitely an inappropriate version.Lewdles' word library is entirely populatedby potentially offensive words. If players are easily embarrassed or offended by rude and risqué words then it’s probably best to stick to the original. That being said, ingenious users could probably come up with some hilarious and suggestive uses to surprise their significant others.

Players of the game have also been inventive with physical objects based on the game. We’ve seen aWordlethemed Valentine’s Day card, a birthday cake, and even a hardware hack that got the game to run on a Game Boy.

Wordleis now available for free, playable on the game’s official website.
