OneThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildfan has found a unique way to change Link’s temperature no matter where he is on the map. It seems someZeldafans are replayingBreath of the Wildinanticipation ofTears of the Kingdom.

Breath of the Wildlaunched on Nintendo Switch more than six years ago, immediately garnering critical acclaim and earning spots on many players' best-of-all-time lists for its staggering open world and focus on experimentation in order to progress. One of the game’s more interesting mechanics is the regulation of Link’s temperature: If Link climbs a volcano without protective gear, he’ll get too hot and begin losing health. Likewise, if he finds himself wading through snowdrifts without enough layers, he’ll start shedding hearts because he’s too cold. Most players manage this by dressing Link in appropriate garb and armor, but a Reddit user has found another way.

Posting to the Breath_of_the_Wild subreddit, user Clean_Cookies shared a video of Link standing in the desert about to expire from the heat, before immediately finding relief by equipping an ice weapon. The user, who claims to have logged more than 165 hours of gameplay, asks, “Am I the only one that didn’t know that fire weapons would make you hotter and ice weapons mak[e] you colder?” The responses vary, with some people saying they’ve known this for years and others surprised thatelemental weapons inBreath of the Wildare more useful than they thought.

The discussion has grown to cover different aspects of the game’s first-rate physics engine. Some users note that equipping ice weapons also helps players carry an ice block through the desert without it melting — and that equipping a fire weapon will melt ice in the mountains without having to actually use and damage the weapon. Others say they’ve discovered that ice doesn’t melt when the player is in the shade. Such revelations are useful for navigatingBreath of the Wild’s combatas well, as a few users point out the elemental weaknesses built into all fire and ice enemies.

Some of these findings are not obvious at the outset. After all, the game is known for its lack of hand-holding regarding the world and mechanics. WhatmakesBreath of the Wilda classicis that progress depends in large part on trial and error. Instead of being frustrating, the gameplay ultimately feels liberating, as players soon realize the constraints placed on many other games just aren’t present here. It’s safe to say there won’t be enough time beforeTears of the Kingdomfor players to discover every single secret inBreath of the Wild, but presumably, everyone is looking forward to starting the process over in the sequel.

Breath of the Wildis available now for Nintendo Switch and the Wii U.
